Many people who were diagnosed with cancer go through a long and difficult battle, but one person from Manhattan won the battle against her disease.

Mary Elizabeth Williams, writer and commentator for the online magazine Salon.com, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2010.  Ms. Williams was fighting against Stage 4 Skin Cancer and the fight was not easy.  She went through several intravenous drug treatments, while also keeping an eye on side effects, according to NY Daily News

Williams had people in her life that helped her get through her remedy of the disease.  Her two daughters gave her a reason to fight.

“There were times when I was scared and cried and there were times when I just had to walk my kids to school,” said Williams in the NY Daily News.  “I had to keep going.”

The cancer survivor also found support with Gilda’s club, which was named after Gilda Radner who died from ovarian cancer.  People there have supported Williams and hoped that she would get better.

With assistance from the immunotherapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Williams had her last treatment in 2013 and became free of the deadly illness.

Since then, she has written about her experience with the deadly condition and sharing it with the rest of the population.  Her stories went from the dreaded news about her illness to her life after treatment.  These stories ended up being one newly published book entitled, “A Series of Catastrophes & Miracles.”

Williams’ goal after her experience is to educate and help others who are struggling with cancer and give assistance for those who don’t know what to do during and after their treatment.
