The housing lottery for the first apartment rentals at the Domino Sugar factory site opened on Monday. Located in the desirable area of Williamsburg, over 100 affordable apartments are up for grabs in the lottery. Initial plans released earlier this year indicate there will eventually be a total of 2,800 apartments.
The apartments in the housing lottery are located in a 16-story building at 325 Kent Ave, just north of the Williamsburg bridge. The remaining apartments in the building will be made available for regular market value upon completion. The building offers amenities like parking, bike storage and a gym, but the cost is not included in rent.
There will be studios as well as one and two-bedroom apartments available in the lottery. There are restrictions on who is eligible to apply for the affordable rentals. Singles making anywhere from $21,772 to $25,400 annually are eligible for the lowest rental price, which is $596 per month. Families of four who make between $34,972 and $54,360 are eligible to apply for the two-bedroom units that cost $979 per month. There is a PDF available that breaks down the eligibility requirements and costs for each type of unit.
The units at 325 Kent Ave. are part of a massive redevelopment project covering 11 acres at the old Domino Sugar factory site. Once complete, there will be 2,800 apartments and 600,000 square feet of office space. There are also plans in place for a six-acre waterfront park and 200,000 square feet of retail and community space.
Applications will be accepted from Monday through January 30, 2017. Â The building is expected to start leasing sometime during the next year. The entire Domino redevelopment project is expected to be completed over a span of 10 years.
