Greeley Square Park
Greeley Square Park, or “the people’s park,” is New York City’s only public space dedicated to the celebration of democracy. The city acquired this parcel of land in 1827 and named it after New York Governor Horace Greeley (who was also editor of the New York Tribune).
It served as a battleground during protests in New York City during the American Revolution, a meeting place for labor organizers in the early 20th century, and an assembly point for New Yorkers on their way to Washington D.C. when President Franklin Roosevelt died. The King Memorial Fountain is located in this park as well, which honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., alongside his fellow civil rights leaders of the era, including Bayard Rustin.
At the park, you can do various activities such as play chess, feed the pigeons, or work on your skateboard skills. New Yorkers and tourists alike will enjoy it here- especially during summertime!
