A Borough Bigger Than Chicago?

It’s no surprise to Americans that New York City is the most populated city in the United States. With over eight million people living in it, it has become not only the most populated city in the country but one of the most populated in the world as well. It is hard to believe that so many people could live in one city, but now a new study has found that Brooklyn could outnumber the third populous city in the United States, Chicago.

How could it be possible? Well with the population increasing five percent from 2010 to 2015, it is coming out on top of the five boroughs, and predictions have estimated that it will soon surpass the windy city. Chicago is the third most populous city in America, with Los Angeles at number two.

It’s not all good news for the borough, as boroughs in New York City are not considered cities in the U.S. Census Bureau, meaning Chicago will not technically be surpassed by Brooklyn, as it is a city outside of New York City. Brooklyn has not exceeded the population of Chicago since 1890 according to Gothamist.

While Brooklyn’s population increased, Chicago’s population also increased, but not by much. Studies have shown that Chicago’s population only increased less than one percent from 2010 to 2015. Not much at all, while Brooklyn would need about 84,000 residents to pass Chicago and become more populous.

A county in Chicago has seen a dramatic decrease in one of it’s counties, one of the worst in the country. So if that keeps up, Brooklyn, in it’s state of mind will become the third most populous city in the United States, even though it will never be recognized as the third most populous city. Hey, New Yorker’s can dream right?
