Who can forget Gene Wilder’s unforgettable in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, or Johnny Depp’s in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? No one. With the energetic and lively personalities of both, they gave an exceptional performance to millions in the movie world. Now Willy Wonka is coming back except this time he’s coming to Broadway.

While not common to make high grossing films into Broadway musicals, it still came as a shock to many when it was announced that Charlie and the Chocolate factory was making it’s way to the Big Apple. Coming from London to New York, it is being promoted with a trailer.

The trailer features purple clouds arriving in New York City right before Wonka himself gets out of a purple car, with his famous purple coat, and spats. He is then facing the Brooklyn Bridge, hinting his arrival in New York City.

The campaign for the musical was filmed in 22 different locations throughout the city and is set to produce more content for the musical. With new trailers coming out later on, locations to be featured are the Staten Island ferry, Times Square, Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain, and Grand Central. The point of the trailers is to promote the musical and show a new perspective to the iconic film. The famed candy maker will be adding a creative mix to some of New York’s most famous landmarks in a ‘magical way’.

Two-time Tony winner, Christian Borle, will be acting as Willy Wonka. The musical debuted in 2013 in London’s west end. Director for the musical will be Hairsprays, Jack O’Brien, as well as musical collaborators,  Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The famous songs, ‘Pure Imagination’, and ‘The Candy Man’ will be making it into the musical. New creative ideas were fabricated to make the musical something to remember, and to bring back some of the film’s memorable characters.

The musical will premiere at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, located right near Times Square, and will make its debut on April 23rd, 2017. Tickets go on sale September 16th and will run until April.
